1988-89 LIMA SENIOR STATE FINALS GIRLS BASKETBALL TEAM

The 1988-89 Lima Senior Girls Basketball season was a culmination of hard work, determination and great
team chemistry.
The journey started two years before the magical season with seven sophomores under the direction of first-
year coach Ron Boedicker and a great group of seniors who set the tone for the young Lady Spartan
Hoopsters.
As juniors they accomplished two major feats that had never happened before, 21-4 record and a regional
berth in the OHSAA Tournament, where they fell short against a very good Toledo Central Catholic team.
Following that loss the Lady Spartans set their goals high and termed their team FAMILY. Now seniors, the
leadership of Tammy Williams, Missy Hutchins -Parker, Danielle Rogers-Good, Kelly Green, Jacqueline
Nance, Ann Preble and Tamara Williams-Owens welcomed a talented support group of juniors and
sophomores and their historic season was under way.
With a one-loss regular season, a Greater Miami Conference Championship and a top 10 ranking in the state
polls, the Lady Spartans looked to the post season with an obvious goal of making it to the State
Championship.
With easy victories in Sectionals and Districts and now with a berth to State on the line, the Spartans faced
powerhouse Pickerington. After trailing as much as 14 points, Lima Senior rallied to win 47-43. It was one of
the biggest wins in Lima Senior Lady Spartan basketball history and gave the team a trip to The Ohio State
University' St. John's Arena to face Cincinnati Mother of Mercy.
The Lady Spartans faced a tough opponent as they started off the game shooting cold from the field and
eventually trailing 41-29 with 6:13 left in the fourth quarter. Once again the Lady Spartans used their 1-2-1-1
full court press called “Tiger” and were able to cut the deficit to 53-51 with 27 seconds left to play. However,
Mother of Mercy proved solid from the free-throw line and pulled out a 57-51 victory.
The accomplishments of the 1988-89 Lady Spartan team still hold true today: Most wins in program history
(24), longest winning streak in history (16) and the only Lima Senior women's team to make a State
appearance.
