1966 JIM BRIGHT AND JIM LEONARD STATE DOUBLES TENNIS CHAMPIONS

Jim Bright and Jim Leonard won the state tennis doubles championship in 1966. They had a 19-1 doubles
record that season, losing only to Chuck Parsons and Robin Fry of Springfield North. Parsons was the 1966
state singles champion, and Fry the 1967 champion, defeating Bright in the finals.
Back in 1966, the state tennis tournament was an all-schools draw; there were no class divisions (like Class A
and Class AA). Like today, players could play either singles or doubles, not both.
Bright and Leonard had a 15-3 doubles record in 1965. They lost in the quarter-finals at state.
In the 1966 tournament, these were the key wins for Bright and Leonard on their way to the doubles
championship:
Defeated Kevin Lynn - Ben Durfee (Ottawa Hills), 12-10, 6-4, in the district finals.
Defeated Rick Bowen - Greg Stone (Upper Arlington), 6-3, 1-6, 7-5, in the state semi-finals.
Defeated Joe Dehner - Ron Lague (Cincinnati Withrow), 5-7, 6-2, 6-2, in the state finals.
Leonard and Bright were the No. 1 and No. 2 singles players for the Spartans in 1965, and vice versa in 1966.

The team, which had a 10-0 record in 1965 and a 9-1 record in 1966, won the Greater Ohio League
Championship both years. Other singles players on the team were Joe Webb, Dale Jones and Greg Skinner.

Nelson Lauless was the coach.
