The Lima Senior boys swim team had a record-setting 1964-65 season of
success and firsts.
The team was the first to compete in 12 swimming and diving dual meets and
remain undefeated, competing against swim teams from northwest, central,
southwest and southeast Ohio.
The Spartan team brought home the second Northwest Ohio District
Championship in the school’s history. Several team members and relay teams
also set pool, team and District Championship records.
The team qualified and competed in the 1965 State Swimming Championships,
finishing in 12th place. The Spartans accumulated 20 points in the preliminary
and then 11 in the final events.
Top state finishers for Lima included both relay teams (medley and freestyle)
and a fifth-place finish by David Pack in the 50-yard freestyle. He finished in
22.8 seconds, just two-tenths of a second off the winning time of the event. The
200-yard medley relay team finished eighth and the 200-yard freestyle finished
seventh, just missing the finals.
Among the major contributors to the team’s outstanding season were Doug Porter, David Pack, Phil Wells, Ken
Leidner, Rick Miller, Pete Kesler, Jeff Stockdale, Hank Sheraw, Gary Scheuffler, Mike Tschour, Tom McKinley,
Bob Howard, Gordon Love, Steve Foulks and divers Fred Wakefield and John Kilgore.
David Pack and the 200-yard medley and 200-yard freestyle relay teams were nationally recognized with Pak
being named an All American. Junior Co-Captain Doug Porter led the team with 96 points in dual meets.
The team’s success came under Coach Bob Welton in his first year as head coach. Welton praised the team
at its 1965 Spring Awards Banquet, saying “I was privileged to coach the only undefeated swimming team in
Lima Senior history. It was one great team effort. There wasn’t any one outstanding swimmer, they were all
outstanding. They gave 100 percent, plus one.”
