The 1988 Lima Senior High School Football Team capped off a tremendous
season with a run at a state title, becoming the first team to make the state
football playoffs in school history.
With Coach Leonard Rush at the helm, the team finished the regular season
with an 8 -2 record going undefeated on the road. The two losses came at home
to Cincinnati Princeton in overtime and to Cincinnati Elder.
Only four teams per region made the playoffs in those days. The Spartans
finished second in their region in Class AAA, which was the big school division
at that time. The win meant Lima Senior would host the first-round game.
Although the Spartans lost the game to Springfield North, it was still a great
season and the team will always be remembered for being the first to make the
state playoffs.
The team produced 17 All-Greater Miami Conference players, which was also a great accomplishment and
unheard of from one school during that time.
First Team players were Dennis Williams, Steve Young, Percy Williams, Rob Howard, Andre Ramsey, Richard
Glover, Nathan Bauman and Rico Williams.
Second Team players were Scott Sweeney, Lamar Marshall, Larmondo Watts, Brian Boyed, Marvin Beverly, T.J.
Winkler and Tony Potts.
Honorable Mention All-League players were Robert Benedum and Michael Jackson.
There were also All-State players on the team. First team All-State honors went to Richard Glover and Honorable
Mention All-State players were Andre Ramsey, Dennis Williams and Rico Williams.
